Dear Colleagues It seems like only yesterday that computer based dental preparations was the stuff of science fiction, but the concepts are catching up with the reality. There is no better example than the CEREC 3D computer aided design and manufacture. This technology bridged the difficult divide between the Dentists' desire to provide accurate, durable restorations with minimal dental intervention and the patient’s requirement to have aesthetic, biocompatible materials placed in a short time.

The coming of age has resulted in an explosion of CEREC providers and CAD/CAM based laboratory procedures. Computer based designs are ALSO entering the realms of 3D Tomography and Bone density scans, 3D tooth and decay mapping as well as Bio-data capture. The Cerec providers’ natural enthusiasm led to a number of study groups and seminars. It seems only natural that the British Society of Computerised Dentistry (BSCD) be formed to address the growing need of such professionals. The society, re-launched in December 2005, will address three main objectives;

Firstly, for our members, the society will assimilate, organise and spread all information required for improving the applications of new Technologies. It will further ensure that the members informed of all the latest developments and that a training pathway is developed.

Secondly, for our potential members, we will act as a conduit of information to help guide them in the decision making process. Finally, we will communicate with the Dental Industry to ensure that the technologies continue to develop to our mutual benefit.

The society has been the result of a lot of effort by dental colleagues, the committee and with tremendous support from both Ceramic Systems and Sirona. On behalf of all the members I would like to thank them. We are confident that we can make the BSCD the most dynamic and professional body of its genre. It now remains to sustain that effort through your support, your attendance, your articles and your ideas. This is your society and you can ensure its continued success.
